Analysing My Mock-Ups

Im pleased with how my front cover mock up looks. I feel like the time and effort i put into cropping Rob out to put him onto a different background has payed off, as it let me have the flexibility to move him where i want and experiment with the colours on the background. I decided to go for a simple black/white gradient effect background as i feel it fits in with the Indie look. As Rob is dressed in a leather jacket and sunglasses he suits the background. Also, i like the blue colour for my headings and titles, the colour stands out on the black background and fits in well with the over all magazine. However, in my final version i want to change the colour slightly, i feel it is a bit of a dull shade so i want to experiment til i find a nicer shade of blue. I also need to make up some more headings down the side of my magazine, as at the moment its looking a bit scarce.
At this moment, im not happy with the progress ive made with my contents page. I like having the word contents written verticly, yet not how ive arranged the letters. I need to experiment with the fonts and placing of the word until i find a more effective place. Im not keeping my background white either, it looks too harsh against the writing, so i need to spend some time trying out a variety of backgrounds until im happy. I think i'll chose black again or maybe of grey.
My double page spread mock up is very minimal at the moment, but the real thing will also be similar. I have chose a picture of a brick wall in the dark so i can have my article written across the wall like graffiti. Rob is doing a minimalist pose as the Indie genre is very simple in what its like anyway, so Rob doing an immature or random pose would not appeal to the target audience. Im pretty sure that i will use the picture in my final peice, but more editing is needed with lighting etc.

Editing Techniques

Continuity Editing - Things are happening in chronological order in the video. It goes from Mariah getting ready, to her meeting her secret lover, to her getting married, to her running away with her lover.

Flashback- At 1.32minutes, there is a flashback. It comes up with a clip of a previous video where her lover appeared. As he threw a flower at her, this then lets us know that this is someone who she clearlly likes and has some connection with. The shot is also in black and white, showing that it is not in time with the rest of the video and therefore stands out as a shot from the past.

Eye line match - At 2.17 minutes, eye line match is used. She glances over down the aisle and then we have a shot of her lover, implying that he is standing there waiting for her. This is used to establish where her lover is, and that she is clearlly thinking about him and looking for him.

Parellel Editing - In the first minute some parallel editing is used. Every now and again the story line is broken up by scenes of Mariah in the shower singing and upset. This is used to show her true emotions as the story unfolds and gives you the impression that she doesnt want to get married which then links into the fact shes got a secret lover. It establishes that even though shes getting ready to get married, shes not happy about it and therefore warns you something bad might happen.

Font Options

I went onto Word to try out a variety of fonts for my title of my magazine. I went down through the scroll bar and highlighted over different fonts until i found a few that i liked. I did it in the bluey colour on my colour pallette to get a more realistic view of what the font would look like -rather than doing it in black. I like the first font (Bauhaus 93) and the fourth font (Forte) but this has now confused me as one is in capitals and one is in lower case. I think the lower case one looks more modern but the top one is more bold and chunky and stands out more. When i start arranging my final version of my front cover i will leave the title till last then try out both fonts to then decide which one to use.
