7. Looking back at your preliminary task (the school magazine task), what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product.

I feel I have progressed loads since my preliminary task. My prelim task was very undetailed, unprofessional and too basic even for a mock up. Since developing my coursework and doing my research and planning I've discovered a whole new world of technologies. I've discovered mise-en-scene is key for creating the right mood for your magazine. By styling my model with spikey hair, appropriate indie accessories and clothing, it appeals to my target audience. Even on my double page spread when I was struggling with lighting, instead of giving up I used my sisters cars headlights on full beam to set the perfect atmosphere. I've tried to use a variety of shots to keep my magazine interesting and show that I know a variety of angles to create effect. By using Photoshop I could cut out my model on my front cover with great detail to get round his intricut hair. Unlike on my prelim where I struggled and didnt manage to get right on her outline. On both my prelim and final I have still used a large headmast, barcode, coverline and plug. I have also kept my final piece similar to my prelim by using the same mid close up on my front cover and using more than one person on my contents page. One drastic change is the fact I've gone from having a girl on the front to a boy, I'm not quite sure why, just when I started researching and getting ideas I thought it would be more effective to use a male on my front cover. Overall I am pleased with my final pieces and feel they look professional and consistent through all 3 pages.

Fonts

I have decided to use Maiandra GD as my main font as it is nice, simple and easy to read. It suits my genre and looks good on all 3 of my pages.

Background for Contents

I decided to use this grey picture as my background colour for my contents. I adjusted the contrast and the brightness to make it lighter. I like the grainy effect as its more interesting than just a plain grey as the background which i had before.

New Models

My Contents page also needed more pictures. So as i already had one of a boy and a girl, i decided to go for one picture of a boy and a picture of two girls. This would therefore make my magazine appeal to both males and females. The top picture is the bestfriend of my original model, so i got him to pose when i saw him out in a nightclub because his outfit was Indie and the red lights in the background looked cool. I took the picture of my two friends at a birthday meal we went two, they had both done their hair and makeup nice and they looked quite similar so thought i could pass them off as sisters for my magazine.

Last Minute Contents Changes

After looking properly at my contents page, i was really unhappy. The fonts were much too boring so i went onto www.dafont.com to find a more original font.

Changing My Ideas

Between my mock - ups and now i have decided to change a lot.
On my front cover i have changed the font IND:E is in - i feel the font on my mock up was too informal, so decided to go for something for casual and bold.
I also decided to double it up, by overlapping the layers, just to make it look a bit more querky.
Another change is the blocks at the top and the bottom. This makes the front cover look neater and seperates the title and the bands at the bottom from the main picture.
For my contents i have changed almost everything. I've kept things minimlastic and added space for 2 more pictures for entertainment.
I have cut the picture of Hayley and Rob out and adjusted the brightness and contrast to make them look more tanned and flawless.

Self Assessment -

framing a shot, including and excluding elements as appropriate - level 3 - as i feel my pictures are suitable with suitable props etc.

using a variety of shot distances as appropriate - level 3 - ive used a different distance for each shot, using a mid-closeup on the front cover which is conventional on a magazine, a full length shot for my contents and a further distance shot for my double page spread so it would fill more of the page.

shooting material appropriate to the task set- level 4 - my pictures fit the genre and appeal to the target audience.

selecting mise-en-scene including colour, figure, lighting, objects and setting - level 4 - for my DPS I used my sisters car headlights to create a night time effect yet still being able to see Rob clearlly and used a variety of settings for my photos.

manipulating photographs as appropriate to the context for presentation, including cropping and resizing - level 4 - i spent a lot of my time cutting out my contents and front cover picture so that i could move the models onto different backgrounds but making it look like they are naturally there.

accurately using language and register- level 4 - i have made no spelling errors and have used a medium register to appeal to my target audience.

appropriately integrating illustration and text- level 3 - ive aimed to fit my text appropriately around my pictures as not to overcrowd the pages

showing undestanding of conventions of layout and page design - level 3 - ive used conventions like a big mast head and large headings, i feel like my end product will look professional.

showing awareness of the need for variety in fonts and text size - level 3 - i need to integrate a different font into my work for more variety but i like my colour scheme and feel the sizes of my fonts are right for each page.

using ICT appropriately for the task set - feel i've used photoshop well to manipulate my images to get the effect i wanted.

Analysing My Mock-Ups

Im pleased with how my front cover mock up looks. I feel like the time and effort i put into cropping Rob out to put him onto a different background has payed off, as it let me have the flexibility to move him where i want and experiment with the colours on the background. I decided to go for a simple black/white gradient effect background as i feel it fits in with the Indie look. As Rob is dressed in a leather jacket and sunglasses he suits the background. Also, i like the blue colour for my headings and titles, the colour stands out on the black background and fits in well with the over all magazine. However, in my final version i want to change the colour slightly, i feel it is a bit of a dull shade so i want to experiment til i find a nicer shade of blue. I also need to make up some more headings down the side of my magazine, as at the moment its looking a bit scarce.
At this moment, im not happy with the progress ive made with my contents page. I like having the word contents written verticly, yet not how ive arranged the letters. I need to experiment with the fonts and placing of the word until i find a more effective place. Im not keeping my background white either, it looks too harsh against the writing, so i need to spend some time trying out a variety of backgrounds until im happy. I think i'll chose black again or maybe of grey.
My double page spread mock up is very minimal at the moment, but the real thing will also be similar. I have chose a picture of a brick wall in the dark so i can have my article written across the wall like graffiti. Rob is doing a minimalist pose as the Indie genre is very simple in what its like anyway, so Rob doing an immature or random pose would not appeal to the target audience. Im pretty sure that i will use the picture in my final peice, but more editing is needed with lighting etc.

Editing Techniques

Continuity Editing - Things are happening in chronological order in the video. It goes from Mariah getting ready, to her meeting her secret lover, to her getting married, to her running away with her lover.

Flashback- At 1.32minutes, there is a flashback. It comes up with a clip of a previous video where her lover appeared. As he threw a flower at her, this then lets us know that this is someone who she clearlly likes and has some connection with. The shot is also in black and white, showing that it is not in time with the rest of the video and therefore stands out as a shot from the past.

Eye line match - At 2.17 minutes, eye line match is used. She glances over down the aisle and then we have a shot of her lover, implying that he is standing there waiting for her. This is used to establish where her lover is, and that she is clearlly thinking about him and looking for him.

Parellel Editing - In the first minute some parallel editing is used. Every now and again the story line is broken up by scenes of Mariah in the shower singing and upset. This is used to show her true emotions as the story unfolds and gives you the impression that she doesnt want to get married which then links into the fact shes got a secret lover. It establishes that even though shes getting ready to get married, shes not happy about it and therefore warns you something bad might happen.

Font Options

I went onto Word to try out a variety of fonts for my title of my magazine. I went down through the scroll bar and highlighted over different fonts until i found a few that i liked. I did it in the bluey colour on my colour pallette to get a more realistic view of what the font would look like -rather than doing it in black. I like the first font (Bauhaus 93) and the fourth font (Forte) but this has now confused me as one is in capitals and one is in lower case. I think the lower case one looks more modern but the top one is more bold and chunky and stands out more. When i start arranging my final version of my front cover i will leave the title till last then try out both fonts to then decide which one to use.

Photoshop Progress

On the first picture (at the bottom) there has been no editing. This is the original picture.
On the middle picture i have started using photoshop to improve Robs image. I have airbrushed out his spots and also used the healing brush to make his neck look smoother by erasing out his hairs. However, as i used the magic eraser tool to crop out his main outline, it did leave some grey making the ends of his hair and round his jacket look wrong.
On the top picture Rob has been fully edited. I have gone round his outline to get rid of the grey that the magic eraser left. By using the eye dropper tool i could get the exact colour of my faded background to then go round Robs outline.

Peer Feedback Evaluation

For potential problems a couple of people mentioned lighting. I will tackle this by using various props like lamps and the headlights of a car to create the right lighting and mood that i want my picture to portray. Also, i will find a picture to match my magazine by dressing my model in the clothing that would appeal to my target audience. The rest of the possible problems were said by a minority.
I'm pleased that so many people liked my colour scheme, nearlly 50%. I feel my scheme is unique so I'm glad that the rest of the group felt like its a positive for my magazine. Also, some people like the unique indie style of my magazine, this is good as i didnt want to change this unles i got a lot of negative feedback about it.
As for advice, nobody really commented about anything inparticular that i feel i need to consider. Im pleased with this as i've spent a lot of time thinking through all aspects of my magazine so now i feel like its paid off as ive got the support of my group.

Peer Feedback

To-Do List...

* Upload peer feedback from my magazine pitch
* Take contents picture
* Complete mock ups
* Finish editing pictures

Backgrounds Analysis

I really like the first background choice as it ties in with my colour scheme. I feel like it looks as if the light has hit from Rob from the top left corner and therefore looks really effective. Also, he is looking to the left so it looks like hes looking towards the light.
The blue background is nice, yet i dont think its very Indie. I feel it looks a bit tacky as the blue is quite harsh and doesnt blend into a very nice gradient - i dont think ill use this one.
I also like the grey one. As i feel grey is a nice neutral colour and therefore will work well with whatever font colours i decide to use on top. I'm going to try both backgrounds with the picture of Rob and then decide from there which one I will use for my final piece.

Front Cover Background Options

Unedited Picture Possibilities

The 1st picture is the one i want to use for my front cover. I like the picture as Rob looks really casual and looks Indie with the way hes styled and his hair and sunglasses. Also, it is a mid shot - so it's at a nice distance and leaves me lots of room round the outside to do the rest of my front cover.

Im going to use one of the pictures of Rob infront of the graffiti wall as my double page spread, with the words surrounding him on the brick wall. As i wanted the picture at night time i needed a source of light, so i actually used my sisters car with her headlights on full beam to create the lighting on the pictures.

For the double page spread I'm going to use 2 little pictures in the corner below the graffiti picture. One of these will be of Rob and the dog and the other will be of Rob and his girlfriend Hayley.

For my contents page im going to have a picture of Hayley lying on the floor with Rob standing above her. Then i can have the contents surrounding them down the left and right sides. I'm yet to take these pictures.

Draft Article

I have decided to use an interview for my double page spread. I've done an opening paragraph and a closing few lines on either end of the interview. However, the mock article is really long, so i'm going to need to shorten it and take out some questions/responses so it fits nicely around the picture im using on my double page spread.

Inspiration

I have chosen the close up picture of the bottom model as inspiration as the way hes styled his hair and wearing a scarf and his overall presence is how im going to have my front cover. Also, i have chosen the picture of the model surrounded by scenery as for my double page spread i want a picture of my model surrounded by forrest and trees and scenery. Both of these models i found on the Models 1 website and i browsed through many of the models portfolios to decide on some key ideas for my work.

Models

I have decided to use my sister and her boyfriend as my models for my magazine. I have chosen Rob to be the main model as i feel he has a good Indie look about him as he has the stereotypical long hair and facial hair. I will include Hayley on the contents page as I'm using inspiration from my magazine research (the contents page of Ciara in Vibe magazine) to incorportate Hayley and Rob in one picture. My front cover I'm going to have a mid-shot of Rob against a plain background - possibly wearing sunglasses. For my contents I'm going to have a picture of Hayley on the floor posing with Rob standing behind her. For my double page spread I'm hoping for a scenic shot of Rob in the woods surrounded by trees.

Colour Scheme

I have decided to chose a blue, grey and white colour scheme. This is because i feel its original and i havent saw anyone use it before for a magazine - so this should make my magazine more interesting and unique. Lots of people in my class are also using black and white, so i thought i would stay clear of that. I feel like the colours would appeal to both male and females as the blue ive chose isnt that dark, so shouldnt put females off reading the magazine. So far for my front cover I'm planning to have a grey background, with a blue title and then all my little bits of writing in white and blue.

Moodboard Explained

The people at the top of my moodboard are what would be a stereotypical image of an 'indie' person. The top left and the top middle are 2 bands that do Indie music and the person on the left is Noel Fielding - out the program The Mighty Boosh - a programme that Indie people would probably enjoy. All the clothing on the moodboard are from websites such as All Saints, Cult and Topshop/Topman. These shops produce clothing such as skinny jeans, converse, chequered shirts, hats, ties and vintage looking items - all which someone whose interested in Indie would also purchase and dress in. Clothing like this is very different and statement, people where them to stand out and look individual. The majority of the clothing is however mens, yet women also wear Indie clothing and enjoy Indie music - a good example of an Indie woman would be Alexa Chung, TV presenter and fashionista. The reason i have put 1980's on there is because that was the era when Indie music really came out and entered the music scene, artists were becoming more individual and experimenting with this new genre of music. This ties into the word 'America' on my moodboard, which is there as America started the genre off, but then was copied in the British industry and has even ended up becoming more famous and popular with more followers over here than over there. There are plenty of Indie bands which are now on the music scene and becoming very popular such as the Kaiser Cheifs (top left), The Horros (top middle) and Kasabien. All these items on my moodboard have inspired my idea for my magazine and the models in my magazine will be dressed in similar items of clothing - as i enjoy this type of music i feel it will make my magazine more effective as i know a lot about the genre and am interested in the type of individual clothing Indie people where.
